Welcome to the debut of the “Wednesday Weigh In.” Every Wednesday, starting today, I’m going to weigh myself and show you the picture of my weight on my bathroom scale.
Does this sound strange, maybe even a bit gross? Perhaps, but there’s a method to my madness. One of the most important things for a diabetic (I’m a Type 2 diabetic, diagnosed in February 2018) is getting weight down, then keeping it down. As weight rises, so does blood sugar, and that’s what diabetics need to avoid.
I’ve found, as have most overweight people, that keeping the weight off is harder than getting it off initially. I do stay well under my highest weight reading of 220 pounds, but my goal is get down to 170 pounds. At that point, I may set another goal of lower weight, but we’ll have to see.
Doing this weigh-in every week should motivate me to stick to a better diet. I struggle with what I eat, as I love all the bad stuff, and much of the good stuff—big salads, vegetables—is harder for me to eat on a regular basis.
Carbs are the enemy of every diabetic, but here’s the thing: they taste good. Especially ice cream. For that, I blame my father. But ice cream is a sugar bomb, and spikes my glucose in a terrifying way. It also puts the weight on, and keeps me from getting thin.
Knowing that I’ll be weighing myself every week, and showing that result to the world, should help curb my cravings for Cocoa Pebbles and Cherry Garcia and pasta and all the other wonderful yummy stuff in the universe.
At least that’s the plan. We’ll see how well it works out. So with that, let’s get to today’s number. I weighed myself at 7 a.m. Here’s the weight:
So there’s the baseline: 183.6 pounds. It’s roughly what I expected, as I’ve been hovering around there for some time now.
I’m not going to try and lose weight quickly. That usually doesn’t work, and will force me to cut back on the calories I need for riding my bike. I’m not going to set a weekly weight loss goal. I’ll just be careful (with the occasional splurge), and the weight should come off slowly but steadily.
I don’t know how long it’ll take to reach that magic number of 170, but I hope you’ll follow along with my progress.
And feel free—I mean, really, really free—to send me encouragement through the comments section (and let me know how you’re doing on your diet, if you’re on one—specific numbers not necessary… ;)).
